What if tourism could uplift a neighborhood instead of disrupt it?
In their final step before certification, the Casiola team looks beyond themselves—focusing on the people and places that give travel its true meaning. From spotlighting local markets and artisans to implementing systems that safeguard the peace and integrity of neighborhoods, they’re redefining what it means to be a responsible guest. Their efforts highlight how strong community connections are at the heart of truly sustainable tourism.
Can a vacation home be both fun and eco-friendly? Casiola is finding out. In this series, they continue their journey to make their homes more sustainable and want their properties to get certified according to Sustonica, the global standard for vacation rentals.
Now begins the fifth episode of their journey, spreading awareness of what it takes to lead with intention in the world of vacation rentals.
Last time on Sustainability Through Sustonica, the Casiola team prevented waste and water loss by having the right appliances and validating their ecological functions. This time, we will be facing the community challenge—making sure that our sustainability goals reach beyond our properties, into the local communities and all around the world.
Community engagement is vital for us. It’s not just about what we provide in our properties, it’s about fostering connections with our guests and the local community. We need to encourage our guests to support local businesses and respect the neighborhoods they’re visiting.
Hi, I’m Cathy Clay and my husband and I own The Pharmacy, which is a local and organic stand here in downtown Wintergarden. There’s a huge draw of tourists that come here because downtown Wintergarden is definitely a destination location.
So in order to draw people in, obviously a beautiful display helps with lots of fresh things, but whenever people are here on vacation, they still need to eat—and most are still looking for ways to eat healthy. We provide a way for them to shop locally, getting their fresh eggs, fresh produce, and other items they can prepare while staying at their vacation homes.
We also offer memorabilia like bags and shirts so they can take a piece of that experience home with them. That’s what we do—connect travel with local living.
When guests choose to shop at farmers markets or dine at nearby restaurants, they contribute directly to the community’s well-being. This helps keep money circulating locally, which ultimately benefits everyone.
We get fresh produce every week—it’s not weeks of transport like food from other states or countries. Our supply chain is simple: the farmer, us, and here. That’s low-impact, high-freshness, and community-focused.
For vacation rental owners and managers, accessibility and respect for our neighbors are key. It’s all about making sustainable travel a real choice for everyone, and giving guests the tools to connect with the area.
A guidebook is a simple but powerful way to boost sustainability in a property. You can offer or recommend places to buy organic food, visit vegetarian restaurants, or explore off-the-beaten-path sights to avoid crowds. And the best part? You can create just one guide and apply it to all your properties in the same area.
Sharing local stories, history, and culture deepens the guest experience—making it more memorable while encouraging respect for the community.
But it’s not just about individual listings. With Sustonica, we’re collaborating with industry leaders like Travelist and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council to help reduce our environmental impact.
Travelist has developed a framework to make global tourism more sustainable. In Spain, where Sustonica originates, it’s third-party validated by a national accreditation body called Enec.
Now, for those of you at home—here’s a quick tip: if you want to shop sustainably, focus on local businesses. Visit your neighborhood farmers markets or independent shops. You’ll reduce your carbon footprint and support your local economy at the same time.
It’s vitally important to keep our farmers in business. If locals and tourists stop buying locally, these products won’t appear in big chain stores. So visiting your local market while traveling helps keep these businesses afloat and growing year-round.
When we promote local artisans and businesses, we help keep neighborhoods thriving, creating a richer experience for everyone.
With Casiola’s commitment to sustainability, we’re not just enhancing guest experiences—we’re also making a real impact in our local areas.
That wraps up our segment on enhancing community engagement. From collaborating with local businesses to highlighting nearby markets and attractions, let’s see how we can all help create a more connected and vibrant experience for our guests.
