Can smarter water use save the planet and your utility bill?
The Casiola team takes on the challenge of water efficiency in sun-soaked Florida, where pools, big families, and long showers are the norm. They implement everything from leak detection systems to low-flow appliances — all while educating guests on simple ways to conserve. As costs drop and standards rise, they learn that water stewardship isn’t just essential — it’s empowering.
Can a vacation home be both fun and responsible? Casiola is trying to find out. As they continue their journey to make their homes more sustainable, they endeavor to get certified under the exclusive global standard for vacation rentals. Sustonica. Now, we continue on the fourth episode of their journey, as they show us all what it takes to push for progress in the world of vacation rentals. Last time we reviewed the risk management criteria and how Casiola’s team is working hard to avoid practice of rentals. Then we will analyze another type of waste, water. How will we avoid the challenge of efficient use of water in Florida, that has a average of 230 to 260 days of sun per year? Let’s immerse ourselves in the water’s responsible management.
Now let’s talk about water itself. First, the reduction of energy consumption. This implies the use of more efficient pumps and transition to solar heating systems whenever possible, which is easy in Florida. Water efficiency is important because most of the people pretend like we have unlimited resources of water, which does not really state the fact here. We have very limited resources in terms of clean water. And if everybody pretends that the limited resources should be used a little bit more consciously, then we could definitely have a lot more resources for the next generations. Small changes like this can make a big difference. Second, the reduction of pollution. We must minimize the impact of chemical products, using sustainable cleaning products and better filtration systems.
I’m Clark Norton. I live in Orlando, Florida. And we’ve been working with Casiola for over four years. So we were more than happy to share our experiences about sustainability. One of the things that helped us to start the certification process is that we see a benefit long term for the savings for energy and water consumption. So we’re excited about the savings that we are seeing there from a cost standpoint. It’s something that we don’t think about until we see the numbers and realize that every little effort counts. Especially with pools and large water systems, it is essential to reduce pollution and consumption. It is about the amount of energy and water we use. And believe me, those numbers can increase quickly. To implement smart systems and choose the right team can save thousands of liters of water a year. It’s not only beneficial for the planet, but it’s also an intelligent decision for the business. Some of the impacts that it’s had on our business is good reviews from our guests. They have not commented at all about having old appliances or having plumbing fixtures that are out of date. So we want to make sure we stay current with all of those things. And at the same time that if these things are more efficient, that also saves us money in the long run for our business. As vacational rentals, the efficiency in the use of water is absolutely crucial for us. It’s not just about what we implement in our properties. It’s also important to promote our websites a responsible use of water. We must provide them with the tools and the proper knowledge to help them preserve it. Some water-saving techniques throughout our properties would be using energy-star-rated appliances such as dishwashers or washing machines. That way it would both save some funds for our owners and it would also help the planet. For everything you sell from home, water conservation is not just something we do in our properties. It’s something that can start today. Small changes such as installation of roofs, shower heads, and low flow sanitary systems make a big difference. And here’s an easy advice. Next time you brush your teeth or brush your teeth, close the roof. With just that little adjustment, you could save up to 10 liters of water a day. From a personal standpoint, sustainability for me, because I have a large family and lots of children, is I want to be able to make sure I’m protecting the environment the best way that I can so that my children and their grandchildren and their great-great-grandchildren can enjoy all the wonderful things about this state and our country that I’ve enjoyed over the years. When we present these measures for accreditation, we are not just marking the houses. We are demonstrating that we take sustainability seriously. Once we have the evidence, we can upload the entire platform to its tonic. From there, we will obtain our distinctive, not only reflect our water and energy savings initiatives, but also highlight our general commitment. It is a great step to put sustainability in the center of our mission. It will be enough to impress the audience.
Discover it in the next edition, where we will reveal the last criteria to obtain the distinctive of its tonic. Join us to explore how to foster connections within the community and create a more sustainable future for everyone.
